.....I'm gone to Carolina!
One of my very favorite James Taylor songs is Carolina in My Mind. And while I don't think James Taylor was singing about South Carolina specifically, hearing that song always makes me think of my many, many trips to the beach.
I'm back home now but I still have plenty of photos to share....Here is some of the scenery I love, and using a bit of the song's lyrics for fun.
Can't you just see the sunshine....
Can't you just feel the moonshine?
Ain't it just like friends of mine, to follow me from behind? (had to change those lyrics just a bit!)
There ain't no doubt in no one's mind, that your dogs' love is the finest thing around (more lyric tweaking! :-) )
And, hey babe, the sky's on fire.....Gone to Carolina in my mind.....

Occasionally......
....We have the nerve! to go to a beach without the boys. This beach is right on the South Carolina/North Carolina line. You need a boat to get to it, or take a very, very long walk from a NC beach town further north along the beach.....
Or, as someone did, ride a beach bike.....
It was old and weathered and very photogenic.
No people for miles around....Ahhhh!
So pretty and peaceful
The little rectangle in the water is our jetski.
I love Sea Oats.
Close-up!
Me playing King of the Hill, or in this case Sand Dune.
The beach was covered in Sand Dollars, but since most were broken I just call it Spare Change.
We brought some lunch along which ensured we had friends. Apparently gulls don't eat carrots or peppers. Click to enlarge.
On the ride home, we stopped for a beer at a restaurant on the InterCoastal Waterway. This is what we looked at.
What a view!

The New Sky Wheel in Myrtle Beach
Last spring when we visited Myrtle Beach, downtown on the new boardwalk, the very beginnings of a Sky Wheel were in the works. This time, this huge 200 foot high ferris wheel was fully operational. The glass cars hold up to 8 people and are fully air-conditioned. Alas, no pets allowed so no Way-up! pictures of Wilson on the ride.
Now I do have a little bit of fear of heights, but I wasn't going to let that stop me! I just knew the view would be too great to miss. The wheel is covered in lights and runs through a range of colors and patterns. It's very pretty to watch. Our condo is at least a couple of miles north, but you can still see the wheel all lit up at night if you stand out on the beach.

Scenery Sans Chiens
Here are a few pictures from one of our jetski days when we did not take the dogs along. We can travel alot further when they stay home.
This is a view, looking south, of the dune area along the South Carolina beachfront. Those tiny little dots on the horizon are the start of beach highrises in Cherry Grove, SC.
Just across the Intercoastal Waterway, and looking north, is a North Carolina beach. It stretches for about two miles before you get to civilization. I love both of these beaches for their very wonderful lack of humans! Nothing against my own species, but miles of empty beach is a very special treat!

John again, having fun.

We stopped to walk the beach awhile, anchored the jetski a fair distance out off the beach. Unfortunately not far enough, as the tide continued going out even further, and left us stranded! The jetski is way too heavy for the two of us to move once it is settled in the sand. We had to wait a good couple of hours for the tide to turn around and bring back enough water to float the jetski again. It was a beautiful day so we really weren't tortured too badly. We had a cooler full of refreshments as well!

Once we were back on the water, we headed up to Calabash, NC (known as the seafood capital of the world, a pretty big claim for a tiny little town). The next photos are some of the scenery along the way.

This beach had many leaning trees such as this. On closer inspection, the were cover in moss, and also zillions of tiny crabs, who were scurrying to and fro.

Desert Island
Here's another view of the beach we go to with the dogs. It truly is an uninhabited island, bound by the ocean, the Intercoastal Waterway, and an ocean inlet to a large salt marsh. There's absolutely no worry about getting a ticket for letting the dogs off leash!

The boys decided to do a bit of exploring in the interior, behind the dunes......
Off we go, this looks like fun!
