I Have a Little Shadow......

My Shadow
By ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON
I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me,
And what can be the use of him is more than I can see.
He is very, very like me from the heels up to the head;
And I see him jump before me, when I jump into my bed.

The funniest thing about him is the way he likes to grow—
Not at all like proper children, which is always very slow;
For he sometimes shoots up taller like an india-rubber ball,
And he sometimes gets so little that there's none of him at all.

He hasn't got a notion of how children ought to play,
And can only make a fool of me in every sort of way.
He stays so close beside me, he's a coward you can see;
I'd think shame to stick to nursie as that shadow sticks to me!

One morning, very early, before the sun was up,
I rose and found the shining dew on every buttercup;
But my lazy little shadow, like an arrant sleepy-head,
Had stayed at home behind me and was fast asleep in bed.

I love the works of Robert Louis Stevenson. This poem is from A Child's Garden of Verses, another of my childhood favorites.

There will be no big or little shadows today, however. We are getting the rains of Tropical Storm Andrea passing over our area throughout the day. On my side of town (north and west) , we can expect about two inches of rain and south and east of the city (DC that is...) might get as much as 4 inches! We won't get any winds it looks like, but it will be a bit soggy, that's for sure!

Jimmy has a private agility lesson after work today. That's a good thing as it will take the edge off of being cooped up all day! Wilson always gets a couple loops around the ring just for good measure, so he'll be entertained as well.

Have a great weekend, Everyone!

  1. That is a poem that I know also from childhood. I often quote the first two lines because my Little Beaver is MY little Cardigan shadow.

  4. Great poem and photo. Thanks 4 reading our post today I saw your comment regarding bulldog health and u r right they can have many issues however the issues have worsened due ti bad breeders and owners who allow their dogs to get fat and don't exercise them My digs can walk over an hour and we do us evenings and mornings on weekends and two shorter walks during the week due to my work schedule many pug and bulldog owners I meet never walk their dogs which worsens their issues my vet always says bob is in amazing shape. I do think the popularity is bad though. I've recently become interested in Sealyham terriers and a big part of their appeal to me us they r not overly popular in fact they need a popularity boost

  7. Cute pic and a lovely poem. I love a good storm - probably because we have so few of them here. We probably won't see any real rain here again until at least October. I miss it already!

  11. As soon as I saw your title, it brought back memories for me. That was one of my favorite books as well - the version I had was beautifully illustrated too. I think it was my dad's favorite book to read to me, probably because he remembered it as a child in the 1920's. My favorites were "The Land of Counterpane" and "Summer Bed".
