I have a friend who likes to make wall art from pieces of driftwood combined with other natural materials she finds. I had been keeping an eye out for anything I might see when we were out on our jetski, either in Myrtle Beach or more locally on the Potomac. Most of what I saw was either the wrong size or too far gone to make use of. Out on the river one day, I found a short branch that had obviously suffered the strangling grip of a vine. It had turned that nice gray color of driftwood and was a short piece I could easily bring home. I threw it in the back of John's SUV when we got back and promptly forgot all about it! A few days later John went out to do something and took Jimmy along for the ride. When they got back, Jimmy came strutting into the kitchen, proudly carrying my stick! Of course I wasn't expecting this so I have no photo, but rest assured, Jimmy was just as pleased as he could be!
He ran to his bed where he would have happily chewed the stick to pieces. I didn't let that happen, but of course I got pictures before I relieved him of his prize! I guess this stick won't make it to being art!

River Rats
Saturday we took the boys out for their favorite summer activity: swimming! Other than eating, I doubt there is anything they like more. In the past, I've posted lots of photos of them enjoying the river, so I thought I would entertain you with videos this time.
These videos were taken about fifteen minutes from my house at a large regional park called Algonkian. It is spread out along the upper Potomac River and has a boat launch. We put our jetski in the water there and then ride the boys out to one of the several islands that are in the middle of the river. That way they can run free (when they aren't swimming!) and there are no worries about being off leash. This time of year, this part of the Potomac gets very shallow, but it doesn't take much water for corgis to swim. Despite being shallow, the river still has a strong current so we kept the boys' life vests on. That way they could use less energy fighting the current, and have more energy to swim.
Here are both boys:
Here's Wilson. I love watching those little back feet kick!
And now Jimmy:
And one final video of both boys:
Wilson may be thirteen, but when it comes to swimming, he gives it his all. He lasted a couple of hours before he started sitting more than swimming. Jimmy was still raring to go, but it's never good to over do. The water was actually quite warm, so not all that refreshing on a hot day. And of course swimming in the river means a bath when we get home! That is very traumatic for both of them. LOL!

A Follow-up to a Follow-up
So the other day I posted a follow-up to my Wordless Wednesday post. Well, now this is a follow-up to that follow-up!
I mentioned that I did not have any photos of what the the four of us look like riding on the jetski. Well, darn it, I still don't! But, I did carry my little water-proof camera while actually on-route to our outing this past weekend and do have a couple of more views to share.
Here's how it looks to me as I ride along......
Wilson.......Just like in a car, Wilson will try to stick his head way out into the air stream for the best smells. John keeps a firm grip on the vest handle at all times! Safety is always our top concern!
Jimmy.......He sits in front of me, with his butt in my lap. I've got my hand on his vest handle as well, although his spot is a bit more secure (and drier!). Jim gets the primo seating due to being a bit more timid about the whole jetski thing.
Arriving at our playground for the day.....We have to be extra careful as we reach our destination. Both boys are so EXCITED at the prospect of swimming, retrieving, and all around general mayhem, that they will dive off the jetski to get the fun started. You should hear the whining and yips that start to happen this close to shore.
On a warm early fall day, this little strip of beach feels like just about anywhere BUT a few miles south of Washington, DC!

Monday Mischief - Swimmin' with Da Fishes
Yesterday was a hot and steamy day so if the boys were going to get any exercise, it had to be swimming! We took them to a tiny beach on the Potomac River. We rode the jetski to get there and it was remote enough Jimmy could bark his fool head off without bothering anyone. Well, almost no one, as some fishermen were nearby and I am sure they could hear Jimmy's big mouth!
I brought along my little point and shoot camera and decided it would be fun to get a picture of me swimming with the boys. Here's where the mischief comes in....I grabbed their lifejacket handles and swam them away from shore, much further than where they go to fetch their floating toys. They were pretty darn positive I was going to drown them! You know, make them Swim with Da Fishes!
Here's what it looked like on the way back in....
And there are even some video tidbits....
And of course the day ended with just a bit more mischief from me....Both boys got bathed when we got home. When you swim with da fishes, you don't smell so good later!

A-Hiking We Will Go!
So last friday, Black Friday , I had no intention of going shopping! There's plenty of time to get my Christmas shopping done, so I didn't have to do it on a day of extra crowded, extra frenzied shopping. I decided to take the boys to a regional park I had not visited before. It is only a few miles away, but first I had to get past the traffic backup going to the outlet mall near my house. Fortunately, I knew a side road to cut around the worst of it.
The park was situated along the Potomac River, but several miles further north than our usual park where we take the jetski and the boys to swim. As a result, the park was on a bluff overlooking the river. It had many well-marked hiking trails. The parking lot was no where near the river, but the second Wilson was out of the car, he tried bee-lining for the water. He was positive we had come to swim! So what if it was November! We started walking and he kept up a very swift pace, pretty much dragging me, first up to the bluff and then rapidly downhill to the river. He's never been to this park before, but he sure knew what trail to take to reach his preferred destination! Smart boy and a good nose, I guess.
Both boys were straining on their leashes to get in that water! Silly boys! The park had a good many hikers wondering around, probably people wanting to counteract their large Thanksgiving dinners, so there was no chance of letting the boys off-leash. But mainly, without leashes, I would have lost them to the river and had to come home with mud-balls. That wasn't going to happen!
Here are a few miscellaneous shots from the day....
The terrain was quite hilly, and it was a good climb to get back up from the river. Despite my usual two to three mile walks each day with the boys, I was actually a bit stiff the next day from this hike! I think I'll try going there more often to see if I can get in better shape!

Washington's Not Just About The Politics....NCC*
*No Corgi Content
Before I launch into a week's (or more!) worth of beach posts, I wanted to share a couple of photos I took back in early September. Living as I do in the Washington DC area, politics are an inescapable fact of life, Presidential election year or not. There's always some hub-bub or scandal afoot, but that doesn't mean you can't find a peaceful moment. For my birthday, we decided to take in a change of scenery, and headed over to the National Harbor . It's a relatively new commercial/residential/private marina development on the Potomac River. While technically it's in Maryland, it's just across the river from DC. We wandered around the shops a bit and had dinner with a nice view of the water. Afterwards, we strolled down the main dock to ogle the many large yachts moored there. The day was just about over and the sun was setting across the river. Here's how it looked.....

Splish Splash!
.....I was taking a bath.......Well, Wilson did have to take a bath once he got home from a day of swimming in the Potomac River. Funny how a dog can LIVE for swimming, but when you get home and take out the hose for a little clean-up, he's wedged under the deck!

Potomac Play Day
Saturday was a bright, sunny, and pretty hot day. We didn't have much on the agenda so we decided to make the boys happy by taking them down to the Potomac River for some R and R.
We have a favorite island we like to ride out to. Every time we go, it's a different scene. Either the river has left behind something or the humans have......

And for the finale, a few seconds of live action......
