Congratulations go out to Coco’s owners, Dina Planche, and breeder-owners, Deb Shindle, Julie & Bill Divens. Coco was beautifully handled by Lois DeMers. While I have no experience in the breed ring, I can only imagine that the joy of this win is out of this world. What a high!

So I am here to remind everyone, that a herding dog in general, and a Cardigan Welsh Corgi specifically is NOT a dog for everyone!
As far as Cardis go..they SHED A LOT ,they BARK, they are BOSSY, they need to be with their people, many have HIGH ENERGY and require LOTS of EXERCISE. If these points are OK with you, Cardigans are a wonderful dog! But don't go into it uneducated!
Cardigan breeders have also just had their job made a little bit more difficult. At least for the next couple of years, they will have to screen potential puppy buyers with a much stronger magnifying glass. They need to keep our beloved Cardis out of the puppy mills and the hands of careless backyard breeders.
Now to lighten my post's mood, and keeping in mind the winning Cardi's name is "Coco Posh", let me leave you with the ever-so-clever blog post title by fellow Cardi blogger Dawn: Westminster Goes Coo-Coo for Coco Posh . Man, I wish I had thought of that!
Woo-hoo!! Congratulations! Hmmm, I wonder if my good buddy Bentley the Corgi knows about this? He must...but I definitely need to check!
ReplyDeleteOMD! Thank you for sharing the name of Dawn's post. That's the real prize winner.
ReplyDeleteHope there's no downside to this Cardi's day in the sun. :)
I know an older Corgi that is really laid back - he is an excellent service dog for his person! Of course, he's a little older so that may account for his mellowness. It's always funny when he and Blueberry meet in the park. Babe (his name) pees on something, then Blueberry goes and pees on top of it, and then he goes back over to re-pee in the same spot, then she goes back over and pees on his re-pee...and you get the point.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it so exciting when your favorite breed wins?? Yay!!
There is a cute story I read a long time ago on someone's blog--the woman was walking with her cardi and her 7-year-old son when she was approached by a stranger, who asked (about the breed) "What do they do?" Her son responded, "They shed!" That's an exciting win!
ReplyDeleteThat dog is related to my "nephew" Reggie. They are half-siblings. Very cool that she's done so well! Was going to mention her on my post tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteBut it's true, there can sometimes be a downside when a certain breed suddenly becomes popular! Hopefully that wont' be the case here.
How exciting, and wonderful tips!
ReplyDeleteThat's exciting! We hope backyard breeders don't jump on the band wagon and just produce poor puppies with problems.
ReplyDeleteBut it's fantastic that Cardigans won.
XXXOOO Daisy, Bella & Roxy
Way to go a Cardigan. Nice one and congratulations. Let's hope this makes the breed more popular. Have a terrific Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes Molly
Yes, more popular in your country would be good, but definitely not here in the States. They are fine just as they are.
DeleteCongratulations to the corgis! We feel your pain. Greyhounds don't win even their group very often on Westminster or the National Dog Show.
ReplyDeleteYay! Hope they don't get even more popular, though. So many owners aren't equipped to deal with them, and I've met several BYB ones that were so snippy and aggressive.
ReplyDeleteThere was this beautifully sweet and friendly Pembroke that lived in my old neighborhood. He and Nola would play every time we saw him and his owner on a walk. It was cute.

My brindle Cardi (not high energy) did a little victory dance, and the other two did victory laps in their backyard. Yay for Cardigans!!!!
ReplyDeleteHOORAY!!! I was so excited to see one of my favorite breeds get group 1 in Herding!! I'm with you in hoping the upswing in popularity doesn't hurt this wonderful breed.
ReplyDeleteWe were thrilled when Coco won best in group. And then last night (before I read your post) we were rooting for her in Best in Show. But on reflection, it's likely a good thing that she didn't take that win. We have always enjoyed the rarity factor with our Cardis. Coco's dad, Dickens, is our Reggie's dad, as well. Love your description of the Cardi's personality -- you nailed it.
ReplyDeleteI love cardis and I know the good and the bad. I may get one when I retire and have more time to really exercise an active breed. It will be either a cards or a wire fox terrier
ReplyDeleteRetro Rover
How cool is that. Congrats to the owners and breeders!
