What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stronger, Right?

You may have wondered Where Wilson Was on Wordless Wednesday.....well, I did not miss my weekly favorite on purpose. Unfortunately, I had a very bad stroke of luck Tuesday night. Tuesdays are agility class, and although Wilson no longer trains, he often goes along for the ride. This week, the crates were all full so I opted to put Wilson back in the car. This time of year, it's already dark out by class time. I put Wilson in the car and turned to head back into the building. Due to the low light, I never even saw that the SUV next to me had a platform attached to its trailer hitch and sticking out a good foot or so further. I caught my right shin on it quite hard and it completely flipped me to the ground! I never saw it coming, I was just on the ground. I immediately knew it was no small hit. I was writhing in pain due to my left knee catching my full weight. Fortunately others were out in the parking lot and came to my aid. After a few minutes and quite a few expletives, I was helped up and went inside. I put an ice pack on my knee and sat out class. A friend kindly ran Jimmy for me and it was fun to see that. I was helped to my car later and managed to get home OK. I kept icing it until I went to bed. Unfortunately, as soon as I got up in the morning, I knew I was in trouble. I could not put weight on my left leg and my knee was the size of a softball! Crap! I hobbled around and knew I couldn't go to work. I knew I was going to have to see my doctor. Well, without the boring medical details, it turned out my knee cap was broken, in several spots! Sh!t! I give you one guess what my first question was to the orthopedic doctor......

So here I am, my leg in a brace that will keep it perfectly straight for the next two weeks. The doctor will then take more x-rays to see if it is healing OK or if I will need surgery to keep the pieces wired together. F#ck! I am fumbling around on crutches, scooting up and down the steps on my butt, or hopping around on one leg. After just a couple days on the crutches, I am stiff all over! LOL!

Now, when life throws a curve ball like this, we are always told to find the positive in the situation. OK, here goes:

1) I am going to have some kick-ass upper body muscles before this is done if my sore, stiff triceps/shoulders are any indication. And one very muscled right leg! Have you ever tried going potty with one leg that cannot bend? Give it a try ;-)

2)  My medical costs should all be covered since we met our insurance deductible already thanks to the motorcycle accident back in October.

3) I've got the best excuse ever for not Christmas shopping at the mall!

4) I'm really not in a whole lot of pain right now. That probably won't hold true when physical therapy starts.

5) All those books I've been meaning to read....well, now I've got the time!

6) I work for a great company that will let me telecommute now that I can't drive. My long, straight leg doesn't fit into my economy sized car, nor would I be able to reach the gas peddle if I did make it to the driver's seat. The seat would be too far back!

So there you have it folks! I am ready for 2014! Bring it on....please! 2013 has not been my best year.

And since I hate to post without photos, I want to share some shots I got from a professional photographer that was at an agility trial back in October. He wasn't a sports photographer, but one that does calendar shots. He still went with an agility theme for most of the shots.....

I don't expect to be posting much in the next few weeks. Hopefully I can get a few holiday shots in to make things festive.

  7. Ouch, I'm so sorry. That sounds like something that would happen to me.

Glad you can look at the brighter side. Luckily, you have two sweet boys to increase your oxytocin levels.

I suspect you'll be exercising Jimmy and Wilson with a lot of fetch.

  14. OMG! I was wondering where you were! You are having some terrible luck!
At least it didn't happen in October or November :) You didn't have any trials coming up soon, right?!

  15. OH NO!!!! That is terrible. I hope you heal up quickly. I know its got to be very aggravating but as some as have already said at least it was at the end of agility season. And on a side note ... those pictures are awesome of the boys jumping. Someone got some excellent shots.

  16. I am so sorry, Taryn! I can't believe you managed to drive yourself home after such a severe injury. Hope your two-week checkup shows your knee is healing so you can avoid surgery! We never know what life is going to throw at us. Love the photos of the boys.

  17. Oh sh#t that is bad news. Just what you need after the motorcycle stuff. I stepped out of the back of our truck camper a few years back. Tore my ACL completely. Take it slow and let it heal.

  18. You poor thing!! Good grief. Thinking good thoughts and hoping for an easy mend. Reggie sends puppy kisses hoping that will help.

  19. Do what the Dr says I broke my knee cap in 1973 and i had problems for years cause i did not do what the doctor said. Get better

  20. Well, you don't do things by halves, do you! Very sorry to hear this and I hope you heal up quickly and properly. Try and be good! I can well imagine it being very difficult to do a lot of things we take for granted when you've got a broken knee cap!

  21. Oh no! I'm so sorry - we will say prayers that it is a speedy recovery with no surgery.

As for the potty - they make a raised potty that goes over your normal one... Kind of silly to mention but so worth it in the long run. It has saved my butt after a few falls off of Baron.

  22. How awful! First the motorcycle accident and now this. :( I hope you get well soon. It's great that you're trying to keep a positive outlook. Attitude helps. Thanks for sharing the cute pics of Jimmy and Wilson. They look absolutely fabulous! If I were feeling bad, these pics would cheer my right up.

  23. Alright. That is definitely enough crappy stuff. It seemed my streak had finally ended but I am sorry yours... Wait! It has ended NOW! And we covered the "W's" for you on Wednesday but just that one time. :)

  24. Oh Taryn! That's horrible!!! Your potty comment literally made me LOL. I hope 2014 is better than this year!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh my goodness, that sounds SO painful! Sounds like you have a good attitude. Too funny about the pottying. And "thanks to the motorcycle accident" is not a phrase you often hear! Hope you heal quickly!! Is the hubs going to be in charge of dog walking??

    1. LOL! Yes, he is and it's not his cup of tea! The dogs won't be getting any long walks until I am back to full speed. Our yard is fenced, but unless it's a bout of diarrhea, they just "hold it" for a walk....stubborn boys!

  27. Oh, God. Many belated I'm sorry's. I really, really hope it heals without surgery. :/
I have worn a knee immobilizer before. I slipped in some water in college and my knee cap flipped completely over and back (which is not as serious as what you've done, I know). You are right about the upper arm strength. Take it easy on yourself.

  28. My knees are aching just reading about that misadventure. I hope you recover quickly and don't need surgery. Dwight Dyke sure did a fantastic job with those pictures.

  29. Good grief - you had quite the year, didn't you? I'm never going to complain about my minor knee pain ever again. Yikes!

Love those action shots! And I am glad you are putting a positive spin on your current situation. :)

  30. Ouch! My mom did that to herself a few years ago. Take it easy and do the PT -- its what helps the most!

  31. Ai chihuahua! How horrid! Here's to the new year dawning peacefully and staying that way!

  32. oh man ouch. I tore my ACL and had surgery in April. Using the bathroom with only one bending knee is hard work.
