At Least We Made the Long List!

Every year at the big Eukanuba Dog Show, the American Kennel Club (AKC), holds its Agility and Obedience Invitationals. They invite the top five dogs of each breed to compete for top dog honors. It is based on a point system, and the dogs with the most points get invited. You have to trial a lot to earn enough points. Needless to say, Jimmy and I were not invited. Not even close. But, being curious, I decided to pull the Top 25 report on the AKC website.

The qualification period runs from July 1, 2012 through June 30th, 2013 (odd, yes), and if you remember, last summer Jimmy had his iliopsoas strain and didn't compete in July, August, or September. We did a few trials in Oct/Nov, then started back up again this past March. Definitely not something that would qualify as trialing a lot. So when I found Jimmy's name on the list of the Top 25 Cardigan Welsh Corgis, I was pretty tickled!

Okay, so we were pretty far toward the bottom. Number 18 for those of you who don't know Jimmy's registered name. But hey, we still made it into the top 20 agility Cardis in AKC. Just think where we might have been with a few more summer trials......

Of course, it's possible there are only 26 Cardigans doing agility which would burst my bubble a bit, but I bet that's not the case!

While I'm at it, my hat is off to the the top 5 dogs/handlers on the list. At #1 is Susan Stephon, she's been on the list several years now, 2nd and 3rd places are the same gal, Carrie Ruhde, also a repeat invitee, 4th, 5th and 6th belong to Joanna McKim, yes, another repeat invitee. These women ROCK! As do their dogs!

Have a great weekend, Everyone!

  4. Congratulations! I think being in the top 20 is just excellent!

Reading this makes me ponder again whether we should try for some agility work with Reggie. I just get the feeling he'd be great at it, but not so sure about me!

    I'm always interested to see a pup's registered name. What's Wilson's?

    1. Wilson's kennel name is Caduceus so he is Caduceus Castaway....Get it? :-)

You should definitely try some foundation classes with Reggie and see if you like it. He's old enough for that, just not full height jumping, AFrame, or weaves. There is a big AKC agility circuit in SoCal. The gal on the above list with 4th, 5th, and 6th place dogs is a SoCal'er.

  7. Congratulations! Super exciting, and I love Jimmy's full name. (Where does "Jimmy" come from?)

I see my sis contemplates agility... Yes, Reggie'd probably be great, but we Hantens (our maiden name) are known for our klutziness! :)

    1. I'm not particularly graceful myself! But with lots of practice the moves become habit :-) It's such a fun hobby, Terry should give it a try! I never thought I would compete, but it really gets addictive and you just want to see how you stack up as a team! It will also keep a high-energy Cardi out of trouble!

  10. Wow, what a thrill! You must be super happy. A lot of hard work went into that, and, like you said, you didn't trial that much. Wow!!!!! Big pats to Jimmy, a superstar!

I am teaching Shyla agility. We'll never compete but we love our small victories. Just yesterday, she learned to weave 4 poles lined up perfectly straight (we are using the Susan Garrett 2X2 method). We'll never be as good as you, but it's fun, isn't it?
