Pave Paradise, Put Up a Parking Lot

You may remember this view from my Woodsy Wilson post back in September. See the log with its interesting twisty trunk where Wilson so nicely posed? Well, that tree was felled because it was dead and my neighborhood HOA deemed it a hazard. Unfortunately, this week, several hundred of its closest friends have been bulldozed, with many hundreds more awaiting the same sad fate. This little woods is no more than a ONE minute walk from my house. It was a tiny oasis filled with squirrels galore, deer, and fox. It is a mere 12 acres, soon to contain 27 single family homes, roads, street lights, and the accompanying noise. **Sigh** To be honest, we knew it was coming, the county had mailed us an "adjacent property notice" two or three years ago. The recession took it's toll and the project happily went on a back burner. Alas, it has once again become active. And even with my logical brain knowing this was coming some day, the first day I walked past, the smell of chain-sawed wood and freshly broken soil brought tears to my eyes and a very tight throat. I know this is also a case of NIMBY (not in my backyard!), but I am just so sad for this little patch of heaven.

  1. Hello, We were just visiting The Teacher's Pet blog and noticed your blog and wanted to stop by and say hello and help follow your blog. Please stop by and say hello and follow us, too. We are SO sorry about your little oasis :( We have a park right across the street and if that were to disappear, we would be sad, too. Sending you Pug Hugs to cheer you up.

  2. What it wrong with them!? It's the woods! People just don't understand how it effects people and the that beautiful environment. I also know that song(the title.) That place is to misunderstood.

  3. I'm sorry! I know the people in the valley down below us felt the same way when our small development was being built. It is such a difficult issue! We moved "out" 25 miles from the city knowing the people already here didn't want any more people and now, after being here 13 years, we are grumbling about the new houses being built and the extra cars that will be on the road. I know just how you feel. AND I know just how it feels to be the new people, too. Such a difficult issue!

  4. OH I am soooo sorry. I would be tearing up too because the wilds are so important to me. So important that 9 years ago we bought 40 acres in NM to retire upon. Have the house and barn built, just need to sell in WA to get down there. Surrounding us will be 30,000 acres of cattle ranch and a million acres of nation forest on our southern boundary. YOU all are invited to come and visit any time and romp and sniff to your heart's desire.
