Living as close as we do to our nation's capital, we try to take advantage of all the city has to offer. For the July 4th holiday, we decided to brave the hoardes, and go downtown. We arrived just as the National Independence Day Parade was grouping to head down Constitution Avenue.
Here are a few of the floats, etc., we saw pass by.......
Now, during the July 4th period each year, the Smithsonian Museum hosts a Folklife Festival on the Nat'l Mall. They pick various cultures from around the world and showcase their crafts and foods, etc. We didn't know ahead of time what cultures they would be, but I was tickled when I saw one was Wales! There were exhibit tents set up with textiles, story-telling, music, and other cultural details. I was very surprised and disappointed when nowhere in the exhibit was there even a mention of Welsh Corgis! When you think of Wales, what else could possibly come to mind??!! At any rate, here is a photo of John under the Wales sign, and below that, me next to a large Welsh Dragon emblem.
Even though I live in the District, I skipped the parade and fireworks. However, I work very close to the Mall and made a couple of visits to the Folklife Festival. I was very disappointed that there nothing about the short dogs. However, I did enjoy the cawl (traditional Welsh stew) and the ice cream with Welsh whiskey sauce. Happily, the food vendors were not selling corgi-on-a-stick!
