First, to explain my title....the landscaping outside the soccer building was some sort of laurel bush (I think) and it was in very full bloom. The blossoms were cloyingly sweet in fragrance and attracted all manner of insects. At one point during the day on Sunday, I took Jimmy out for a potty break. I wasn't even that close to the bushes, but a wasp did a super fast fly-by, stinging me, through my sock, on my ankle. It felt like being stabbed with an ice pick! I went right inside and got a bag of ice from the snack bar. A fellow competitor even had a first-aid kit with a bug bite pad, so I used that too. I haven't been stung by a bee or wasp in years, but I wasn't really expecting too much of a reaction. Between the ice and the medicated pad, I pretty well stopped the reaction. It was a bit itchy and sore where my shoe rubbed it but not too bad. I was very thankful the wasp stung me and not Jimmy! To my knowledge, he has never been stung before, so I certainly didn't want to see what his reaction would be at an agility trial, and away from our usual vet.

On Saturday, just after our first run of the day, a thunderstorm rolled through. It came with several loud peels of thunder and sent Jimmy into a meltdown. We spent the next hour holed up in my car with the A/C running. Jimmy feels much safer in the car so we went out there to try to re-gain his sanity. Fortunately, I had a really good audiobook going, so the time flew by. Also, a fellow competitor had a product used to reduce anxiety called VetriScience Composure which comes in biscuit form. She gave me one for Jimmy to try, and I do believe it helped. The trial was a one-ring trial so our runs were spaced out by many hours, so Jimmy had pretty much recovered by the time his next run came due.

On Sunday, the day dawned sunny but oh, so HOT . It took your breath away to go outside. There was no walking the dogs to kill time, or get exercise. It was quick business....(get stung by a wasp!) ....and hurry back inside. Thankfully the A/C kept up with the heat and the building stayed pleasant all day.

As to how our runs went.....Meh! Jimmy and I were only 1 for 4 by the end of the weekend. Each run had just one mistake....a dropped bar, a table refusal in the run after the thunderstorm. I don't think Jimmy wanted to have to stop as he was still a little stressed and moving felt safer, and finally a dogwalk contact got us. Sigh. Jimmy did redeem himself in the very last Jumpers run, Qing and getting the blue ribbon.

A busy weekend. Well done Jimmy! Its is best not to eat wasps. I found out the hard way!
ReplyDeleteI'm always intrigued by which dogs react to thunder and which ones are not bothered at all. It has little to do with other personality features. I've seen courageous dogs whimper at the first sign of thunder and timid dogs not afraid at all.
ReplyDeleteBummer about the wasp mischief and the thunder. Rita did pretty well with it, except when I tried to take her out front on leash to do a quick potty between downpours. There was a huge crack of lightening and thunder right as she was about to do her business, and that put the kibosh on that plan! It was ears down and race back to the house. Congrats on the blue ribbon! (I'll have to check out those biscuits.)
ReplyDeleteAhwgh, wasps. Stick to eating treats from mummy... Mine aren't too phased by thunder, but at competitions, I can see how it could be off putting.

WOW! You all had a lot going on!
ReplyDeleteBee sting and HEAT. Doesn't sound like the most enjoyable of events.
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed he had any clean runs! That was a lot of trial drama.
ReplyDeleteOuch! I'm sorry you were stung! I hate flying stinging things! Ugh! It sound like you had a rough weekend!
ReplyDeleteWow, a crazy weekend! I haven't been stung in years too, but it was nice someone had the bug stink pad and that Jimmy didn't get stung. :)
ReplyDeleteRough weekend, but good job on the Q! Stings are no fun. :(
ReplyDeleteHi Y'all!
ReplyDeleteOh dear, stings have sent my Human to the hospital. Glad you're okay. Tough weekend.
Y'all come on by,
Hawk aka BrownDog
Oh man! Good things that wasn't my Ma! Like Hawk, Ma is allergic to Wasps! That wouldn't been good at all! Butts, sounds like you are a trooper! And so is Jimmy! Good job on the Q!!! WoooHoooo!
ReplyDeleteKisses,
Ruby ♥
pees: Ma says wasps are just a**holes! ☺
Great photos!!!! But I'm sorry Jimmy and you had such a trying weekend. Wasps, thunder, heat - I think that getting that 1 Q was a huge accomplishment!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the look of intensity on his face in the second photo.
ReplyDeleteOuch! A sting on the ankle would hurt!
ReplyDeleteOuchie Weasley is allergic to bees

Oh yuck we hate wasps they always sting Ginger! Sounds like ya'll did pretty great considering the wasps, heat and storms. AC is definitely our friend this summer.
ReplyDeletesome really great photos.
ReplyDeleteI sympathize with you about the wasp. When I get stung if feels like a white hot poker going in, it's guaranteed to swell up and itch like crazy and will continue that way until I go get a steroid. UGH
ReplyDeleteDespite the mischief with the thunderstorm and Jimmy's mishaps in the ring, it sounds like you handled it pretty well. Congratulations~
