When it comes to cleaning Jimmy's and Wilson's teeth, I have to confess I don't brush them. I know I should, but I don't. It doesn't help that the vet always comments on how good their teeth look. I credit a primarily raw diet for keeping the plaque build-up to a minimum, as well as a weekly treat of a raw marrow bone.....

This keeps them happy and Zen-like for about an hour. Of course, as with any chewing activity, I keep a close eye on them to prevent any choking hazards. Jimmy usually finishes first, and I know it, because he loudly protests the fact the Wilson is still gnawing away!
Oh, and one other bonus to using the marrow bone method of tooth brushing....the boys
definitely don't run when they see me coming with their "toothbrushes" :-)

Charley thinks toothbrushing is a game where he tries to bite the tip of the toothbrush off and poor Finnie just lets me do it. We have bones for them to gnaw on too. Their teeth look great so far. Nice compliments from your vet!!
ReplyDeleteWe are the same too. We tried the toothbrushes but it was not great for any of us. Now we do dried food at night (wet in the morning) and dental chews and raw hides. Works for us. Have a fabulous Friday.

Yeah, I'm pretty lazy with the tooth-brushing. I try to do it now and then - and she's actually okay with it since I brush her teeth with coconut oil but it's still hard because she just wants to lick the oil! I usually do a split antler for teeth cleaning (which works very well) but need to try the raw bone thing. Can I ask a dumb question? Where does one get a raw marrow bone?

DeleteMy all natural pet store (most expensive but high quality)
the farm market because they have local beef farms selling their goods (no antibiotics)
the grocery store in the meat dept. Sometimes you have to ask the guy in the back. This is my least preferred place since the bones come from the feedlot cows so have been treated w/ antibiotics.
I know like NOTING about dogs!! Lol.But I think your idea of using bones to brush their teeth is a good idea!! I wish I could do that with my Ragdoll Nico he hates gettin his teeth cleaned MOL! Ugh! To you happen to have ANY ideas for brushing cats teeth?!?! If so please swing by my blog "n" give me a comment! So I can deal with Nico Bol!

DeleteWe're definitely bone girls. We've never had our teeth brushed AND we've never had any problems. Our bones come split down the middle, so we can get that lovely marrow out before chewing on the bones...for days.

I brush Nola's teeth nightly, since she was 12 weeks old. She loves it because she always gets a treat before and after brushing. I'd try raw bones with her, but since Nola's around a baby everyday (not mine, I'm the aunt) I'm not willing to risk anything.

That sounds like a good idea. My toothers are FABulous, butts Ma doesn't do anythings special. She's keepin' an eye on them though. She has started usin' some water additives from Epic Pet Health that seem to be workin', butts who knows! BOL

I've given Beamer raw marrow bones before and he loved it. Maybe I should do that instead of brush his teeth, since he hates it so much!
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing like a good chew on a raw bone to make a dog happy and keep his (or her) teeth clean! Wrigs was raw fed and regularly got raw bones before his IBD/lymphangiectasia diagnosis in 2009. Sadly, he can't have bones now--seems to be unable to tolerate them.

We don't feed a raw diet, but I cheat with their teeth, too, and give them RMBs when I see they are getting gross. Works great!

Jimmy, and Wilson shure do seem to enjoy thoes bones :)! I was wanting to put Joker on a raw diet too, but everytime I have brought it up to Joker's vets all of them tell me not to do so. So I have no idea what to think about it.
