Taughannock Falls State Park

On Tuesday, we drove to Taughannock Falls State Park. It was a short drive north up the western side of Cayuga Lake, one of the Finger Lakes.

This was the location of the falls used in my new header photo. It was another dog-friendly park so we brought Wilson and Jimmy along for the hike. The trail worked its way along the downstream section of the falls. There were ample opportunities for the boys to dip their feet, but not really swim.......

The scenery along the way was quite impressive.....

It was another hot and humid day, but the destination was well worth enduring the heat. You were able to walk up quite close to the bottom of the falls and we got a nice heavy misting from the water as it splashed to the ground. The power of the falls also produced a strong breeze, that, mixed with the mist, was very pleasant!

I didn't take any really close-up shots as my camera did not need a drenching.

At 215 feet high, Taughannock Falls is the tallest waterfall in the northeast. While obviously nowhere near as broad as Niagara Falls, it is actually taller!

You could also drive up to an overlook above the falls to see it at a different angle.....

We went to one other state park while we were away. I don't have many photos from that excursion as the main trail was not dog-friendly and I didn't do a good job with my homework! We had brought the dogs along and so had to stay to the outer (almost boring) trail. It was hot and we were all a tad grouchy by the end of that one! But I'll share what I took in another post.....

Have a great weekend, Everyone!

  1. So glad you and the corgis enjoyed visiting my neighborhood. Your pictures are beautiful.

Did you stop by the Ithaca Falls in downtown Ithaca? It's where Honey and I walk, wade, and sometimes "swim." http://www.somethingwagging.com/stay-open-to-new-things-good-for-the-dog-good-for-you/

  4. Woo hoo! A photo OF the (dog)mom-ster (rather than "by")! That's rare! The last photo emphasizes how tall the waterfall actually is.

  5. Gorgeous photos! Looks like such a great trip. Jealous!

I hate that when state parks aren't dog friendly! Such a bummer cuz we'd love to someday take an RV trip and visit all the national parks and some state ones - but so many aren't dog friendly on the trails. :(

    1. All in all, I thought the Ithaca area was quite dog friendly. I could "sort of" see why the main trail at the one park didn't want to accommodate dogs based on how it was paved and walled. People not cleaning up after their dogs would be a gross problem. It was my fault for not reading the rules closely. In general, the dogs were welcome many places and the rangers seemed relaxed about dogs.

  6. What a fantastic place! Is the pool at the base of the waterfall deep enough to swim in? The boys look like they had a great time!

    1. I imagine it was, but it was fenced off. I think the water was too powerful at the base to allow people in there. In the Ithaca area, there were several other waterfalls that allowed swimming.
