I have several dog doors in the house (because I have several Cardigans). When I have my occasional litter of puppies, I litter train them first -- a rabbit drop pan about 1/3 full of pine stall pellets. They pick it up immediately. At about 5 weeks old, Chase teaches them to use the dog door from the puppy pen to acovered outdoor pen. He gathers them around him and goes out the doggy door. Of course the puppies are amazed that he disappears through the wall. So then he sticks his head back in and encourages the puppies to follow him. It generally takes them four or five false starts to realize that they too can walk through the wall. GoPro video on the next litter. I think their new homes appreciate Chase's efforts.pennihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10597061803462709475noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-711010924365714020.post-48227080682194692422015-10-19T21:50:32.322-04:002015-10-19T21:50:32.322-04:00I guess I don't have any funny stories about h...I guess I don't have any funny stories about housetraining, but my experiences with my two dogs were very different from each other. Shiloh was my first dog (well, second, but he came only a month after my first dog, who was an adult and didn't need to be housetrained). Shiloh has always been so easy, and house training was simple with him. I think he had two accidents in the house, and that was just because I hadn't figured out his signal yet. Wager, on the other hand, was a nightmare! He's a small sheltie, and when he came home with me, he was no bigger than a water bottle. But it was February in Upsate NY, and the temperature was 20 degrees below zero. I couldn't safely take him outside as often as I did with Shiloh (who had the opportunity to go out so often he just didn't have a chance to go in the house!). So I tried one of those fake grass stations. Such a pain. It *smelled* so bad, even when immediately cleaned (though to be fair, he had some stomach issues as a puppy). He always stepped in it and tracked everything all over the floor. It was a nightmare trying to convince him, once the whether was better, that he should go outside instead. Even after a long walk, he'd refuse to go then come in and go on the carpet or under the bed. Never again- I will never go through house training in the middle of winter again!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15821283365953215332noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-711010924365714020.post-16418195434187299772015-10-19T19:04:52.380-04:002015-10-19T19:04:52.380-04:00I was lucky because my Lady Girl was basically &qu...I was lucky because my Lady Girl was basically "house-trained". She was raised in a no-kill shelter until the age of 3 to 4 yrs of age from mere puppyhood. She only had a couple of accidents. Oh, and one when we moved back to Texas. She marked her territory in the house, just once!!! This book is also my favorite Jackie book too! And of course you're invited for the margaritas. Now we just need to plan something!

I never fully house-trained my beagle, but we did do a good job with Sampson. When we first started I was told you can only correct him if you catch him and then you should pick him up and bring him outside so he knows that is where he was supposed to go. (What the hell did I know then? Nothing, but that's how we trained him and it worked.) Well he was SO good about not letting me catch him. The second I'd leave the room, he'd pee on the floor. But he only pooped in the house one time and here's that story.

I was sitting on the couch chatting with my nephew and I looked in the kitchen and there was Sampson popping a squat. I said, "He's shitting on my floor!" (Is that okay to say here?) They sound awesome. I'm always on the hunt for the next book so I've just added Jackie to my list.

Now for our story so we can get in on the action. This one has to do with Tucker. He was probably one of the hardest puppies to house break, but thankfully it did finally happen. The funny story comes when we were at my parent's house helping decorate the Christmas tree. Tucker is just milling out doing his thing when all of a sudden I see him take a keen interest in smelling the base of the tree and getting into marking position ... you can see where this story leads. He did indeed try to mark the tree but missed as I was scrambling to grab him!! We still laugh about it and say he was just confused that trees aren't suppose to be inside.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06225142525856577784noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-711010924365714020.post-45276901430401696902015-10-17T21:58:49.606-04:002015-10-17T21:58:49.606-04:00I am about done with the book, so don't enter ...I am about done with the book, so don't enter me. Okay, so all of my dogs have been adult rescues, so I don't have any house training stories...but my oldest dog is now in diapers, so I'm hoping that counts...

She's big, I mean BIG, eighty-five pounds, and now that she is approaching 16, she can't quite hold it over night, and sometimes she has accidents during the day too, just "because." And even though she's wearing those doggie diapers, they don't contain ALL the mess, (I mentioned she's BIG right), so we've been vigilant at night.

Now, if she so much as gets up to circle, either me or my husband jump up and run her outside. Even if it's 3:00 AM! Sometimes, she even seems to forget why she's out there, so we remind her, "Go potty," "Go on, go potty," until she does...

Kind of funny how it comes full circle, and a dog that was formerly "house trained," no longer is. Guess that happens with us people too, doesn't it?Donna O.http://www.donnaandthedogs.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-711010924365714020.post-24512952694289653042015-10-17T17:26:44.724-04:002015-10-17T17:26:44.724-04:00Great review, I also follow Jackie, love her and r...Great review, I also follow Jackie, love her and read one book which was great. That look on Jimmy's face! (Pretty sure I know what scene he's at!) And, yes, you must join us for the margaritas! That would be awesome!

I'll share a funny house training story... It's not *exactly* about house training, but it's related. When we first got our beagle Bailey, we lived in an apartment. She used to be REALLY addicted to chasing the laser light and we had to "buzz her" (as we called it) every morning and every evening so she could get her fix. Well, this was in Canada and one day the weather was terrible so we were buzzing her up and down the hallway outside our apartment. She would get SO excited about the laser she couldn't process anything else. She was still a pup, but mostly house trained then, but mid-game, she just stopped and peed in the hall! No way was she going to interrupt her fave game to let us know she needed to go outside. We cleaned it up as best we could and got the heck outta there before anyone saw! (Thank heaven for no security cameras.) #BadResidents.
