My cardigan had hernia repair and I injured my back while carrying her up an down the outside stairs (and she only weighed about 26 pounds). When the hernia repair required a "redo" I asked my husband if he could build some wooden ramps to cover the 2 sets of outside stairs. We covered these ramps that had slats every 10 inches or so with inexpensive indoor/outdoor carpet. This really saved my back and resulted in a successful hernia repair AND the ability for my other 13 yr old Cardigan to make it up the stairs again. Highly recommend something like this if you have a handy person around the house.
