Jimmy and Wilson Want to Do Their Part.....

....to help feed shelter dogs!

Just for posting to my blog today, Pedigree will donate a 17 pound bag of food to an animal shelter. It's hard to pass that up! Every blogger that posts about Pedigree's donation campaign by June 30th sends another bag of food to a shelter.

 So, who's next?

Splish Splash!

.....I was taking a bath.......Well, Wilson did have to take a bath once he got home from a day of swimming in the Potomac River. Funny how a dog can LIVE for swimming, but when you get home and take out the hose for a little clean-up, he's wedged under the deck!

Wishes Do Come True!

BARK! BARK! WOOF! YAP! BARK!

BARK! BARK! BARK!

I wish, I wish, I wish......Jimmy would shut the hell up!

Ahhh! Blissful silence! But I would have wished for something better had I known it would come true!

The Weekend Report - Two Steps Forward, One Step Back

Well, yesterday was the Potomac Valley Golden Retriever Club agility trial held in Westminster, MD. This trial was run small to tall so it made for a nice short day. Gotta love that! Unfortunately, that's all there was to love...well, other than Jimmy, in a general sense! We had no success in either run, so it was a big double-NQ!

Standard was first. I knew where I would find trouble on the course and sure enough, I did! It was the dogwalk, to a jump, to the far end of a tunnel. Clustered into that same area was the table, as well. I was so concerned about, a) Jimmy hauling down the dogwalk toward the off-course end of the tunnel and/or blowing his contact and b) in trying to work the end of the dogwalk, that I might actually get an off-course table, that I ended up getting a refusal at the jump he was supposed to take because my handling sucked!  Jimmy was a bit annoyed at me for all the confusion, so he did not want to get on the table. After a couple of tries, he did get on, I praised him profusely, and we ran the rest of the course cleanly.

Jumpers was not too long a wait. It was not a very difficult course. Unfortunately, Jimmy took out the top bar of the triple. I am pretty sure it was my fault as I think I told him to go to the tunnel while he was still in the air over the jump. Saying anything over a jump is a very good way to get a bar as it calls Jimmy's attention to me and his feet drop just enough....Since I am on the quest for Double-Q's, not qualifying in STD means not qualifying in JWW really isn't too upsetting other than missing out on a few speed points.

Here's the STD run.....I did not get video of JWWs.

Tracking Jimmy's MACH progress:
Excellent B JWW legs: 20 (out of 10 needed for his MXJ) Now he's working on his MXJ3!
Excellent B STD legs: 7 (out of 10 needed for his MX) Better than halfway to our MX!
Double Q's: 5 (out of 20 double-Q's needed for a MACH.... 25 Percent!)
MACH Points: 386 (out of 750 speed points needed for a MACH...... 51 Percent!)

Time 2 Beat legs: 4 (out of 15 needed for his T2B) 32 points (out of 100 needed)

Is This Another Way of Saying It........?

At last weekend's agility trial, the end of one of the indoor soccer fields was decorated with this:

Is that just another way of saying Release the Kraken ?

Have a great weekend, everyone!

The Longest Day of the Year

I love the long days of summer! So today is my favorite day of all! Today has more hours of daylight than any other.

I don't usually get home from work until 7PM. That makes for a late dinner hour. Even after the meal's cleanup and a short dog walk (due to super-hot temps), it was still full daylight. I thought I would document the lateness of the light in a special way.

Check this out.....

9PM and the sky is still blue!
Now I know 9PM isn't the latest daylight there is. I can remember a dinner I ate in Paris one time at nearly 10 PM and it was still full daylight! But here in Northern Va., this is as good as it gets.

Now you probably can't see the details of the clock in the picture above. So here is a bit of a close-up....

This is a lovely Barbie Sonnett work of art. The text at the top says....It's Cardigan Corgi Time!
This is one of my most treasured of her sculptures that I am so lucky to have, both amazing and functional!

HAPPY SUMMER, EVERYONE!

The Weekend Report - Table Success!

This weekend Jimmy and I had our first agility trial since the Cardigan Nat'l Specialty back in April. It was held by the Mattaponi Kennel Club. I am pleased to report we were much more successful this time!

Of course, getting Jimmy on the table is always my biggest concern. I have been working with him on targeting the table. He's been hopping on and poking his nose at a bottle cap resting in the middle. I tell him to "Go touch" to get him looking for the bottle cap. I don't know if this is truly what helped but he did his table on Saturday without any hesitation. And as luck would have it, all the bars stayed up and his contacts were good. He was pretty speedy too, so we ended up with 4th place. Jumpers was a challenging course with some interesting turns on either end of the weaves. Again the bars stayed up and we had a clean run! We weren't in the ribbons, but still a very respectable 8th place.

Sunday, in Standard, Jimmy again gave me a beautiful table. No hesitation whatsoever, just popped right on. I was amazed, pleased, relieved, you name it. But, alas, he came flying down the dogwalk, completely ignored my command for his 2on2off at the bottom, and sailed right over the contact zone. Sigh. I couldn't get too upset though as the table was a big victory. Jumpers was a really fun, fast course and of course with no double-Q on the line, I was calmer. Jimmy flew through it cleanly and came in 6th.

I didn't realize until writing this post that Jimmy's 2 JWW legs this weekend means he completed his second MXJ requirent of 10 legs! I don't really think there is truly an MXJ2 title, but he has now earned a total of 20 Excellent B JWW legs.

Here are Saturday's runs.......

Vying for the Vent!

The weather really heated up over the weekend, hitting the low 90's with increased humidity. Needless to say, when you are always wearing a thick coat, you overheat quickly.

The boys ran around the yard a bit, played some fetch, and then bee-lined for the back door. I could barely open it fast enough as they raced for the a/c vent. It was pretty much a tie, so they jostled each other for the best air flow. It's not like there is only one vent in the house, but this one is the favorite. It is in the kitchen after all.

How quickly can you cool off when you are jammed up against another overheated body?

Wilson: You move! I was here first!

Jimmy: I'm not going anywhere and you can't make me!

Foxy Lady! ......But NCC*

*No Corgi Content

I've been trying to make a point of always taking my camera on the dog walks. It seems every time I get lazy and don't, something picture worthy happens. Yesterday, I took it and had the long lens on!

Here's what I caught.....

Here's the little vixen watching the boys make asses of themselves, pulling and yelping to get at her.

One last look to be sure they are still leashed.....

And Laughs.......

Got to keep the loonies on the path.

It's a glorious summer day here...Blue sky, low humidity, simply gorgeous!

Have a great weekend, Everyone!

A Jimmy-ism

It's always good to follow up Wilson's big day with something about Jimmy. This little guy is chock full of personality, charm, and amusing little quirks. However, it can be hard to catch on camera....

One such quirk happens just about every morning. When I get up, the boys of course follow me down stairs. Thus begins the wait for breakfast. A wise person once told me to never, ever feed dogs their breakfast as soon as you get up. If you do, you will create little monsters that will devise ingenious ways to wake you up earlier each day in hopes of speeding up the meal delivery. So my guys know they are going to wait through coffee being brewed, the kitchen tidied, computer time, etc., before there is any hope of breakfast.

To kill time, they watch out the back door for any trespassers. We have a veritable wildlife super-highway just beyond our fence. On any given morning it is quite likely to see deer, a fox, squirrels, rabbits, a groundhog, and most offensive of all, the neighbor's cat. If the boys aren't looking for critters, there's a chance they will doze a bit. This is where Jimmy's quirk comes in. He combines the dozing and the watching into one posture. He lies right up against the back door, and uses his nose to prop his head up while looking out the window. It reminds me of the way we humans rest our jaws in the palm of our hands in order to hold up our heads.

Here's Jimmy......

The Struggles of the Stick!

A stick big enough for two!

Jimmy yelling at Wilson to let go while still maintaining his hold.

The stick lost some length during the battle.

I'm not letting go!....Me, either!

Jimmy lost his grip and was rewarded with a big splash in the face!

Wilson enjoying the spoils of tug-o-war.

And, as usual, saving my favorite for last.......I love the light!

Having warmed up on a mere stick, the boys move on to a log!

Agility in Small Spaces

I've got a very small yard. The house, driveway, deck and a patio sit on just 1/5 of an acre. Add to that several landscaping beds and a backyard that isn't level, and I've got very little space to set up my agility equipment.
Having grown up in the country with a large yard, when we bought the house, I rued how small a yard it had. Soon enough, after adding trees and beds, mulching, trimming and mowing became a chore, and I was glad the yard was small. But along came my agility obsession, and I was once again wishing for a large flat yard! Sigh. Luckily, the fabulous training center I use is only a few miles away, so I do have access to the full range of equipment, but only on class night or if I sign up for a private lesson. So, I have to make due with my small yard if I want to practice at home. Yesterday was such a day. The huge storms had passed through my area leaving behind a gorgeous low humidity day.

Here's how my yard looks, set up for some fun.....

Giving a nice tight wrap turn on the Double

My Pac-N-Go tunnel...Love it!

Jimmy loves the weaves!
And finally, my "dogwalk"....Classy, huh? But there is room for a 2on2off!

I haven't attended an agility trial since my dismal showing at the National Specialty. I didn't get in the one I tried for in mid May, I skipped the 3-dayer over Memorial Day weekend to keep in the good graces at home (if you know what I mean....), so I will finally have one in mid-June. I'm looking forward to trying it again, but mainly just to see me friends and hang out.

Three Years of Blogging Today!

I don't know why it occurred to me to check the date.....but today is three years to the day of my very first blog post.

Many thanks to everyone for coming along on this little journey. I have truly enjoyed and appreciated the gifts of your time and your comments.

I'll leave you all with a beach photo I haven't posted to the blog before........

I'm Sure You've Heard the Expression.....

....Having eyes in the back of one's head......

Well Jimmy (and Wilson, too!) have Eyes on the Top of their Heads! Whenever we are eating at the kitchen island (or would that be eye-land?), the boys set themselves up to keep an eye on us and of course, our food.

Here's an example:
I can see you! I know what you are eating!
I wonder what it's like seeing life from underneath everything?

Have a great weekend, Everyone!
